How UTM Tracking Parameters Work
When a user clicks on an ad, newsletter link, or social post, the appended UTM query string provides contextual metadata to your analytics engine. Instead of seeing generic “Direct” traffic, you gain deterministic attribution on what drove the conversion.
Identifies the platform or site sending the traffic. Examples: google, newsletter, linkedin.
Identifies the marketing medium or delivery channel. Examples: cpc, email, social, affiliate.
The specific marketing campaign, launch, or seasonal promotion. Examples: spring_launch, black_friday_2026.
Optional granular tags: utm_term tracks paid keyword phrases, while utm_content differentiates creatives or button links within the same ad or email.
- Always use lowercase: Never mix “Email” and “email”—keep all values lowercase.
- Use hyphens or underscores instead of spaces: Spaces create ugly
%20encodings that can break in email clients. - Never use UTM parameters on internal site links: Appending UTMs to internal navigation overwrites the original referral source and corrupts your session attribution.
